"I haven't tasted any finer, deeper, more complex and sustainable Pinot Noirs in Germany"
Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

“Rudolf Fürst is an acknowledged Pinot magician in Germany”
Jancis Robinson MW

A combination of exceptional vineyards, detailed manual vineyard work and the very lightest of touches in the winery, has seen Fürst become one of Germany's most revered wineries. Anne Krebiehl MW: "Modest about his towering achievements, Paul Fürst reports humbly of his exacting, uncompromising quest for quality... Every production parameter was questioned, as he learned, travelled and experimented to emerge as Germany’s finest Spätburgunder producer."

Today, we are delighted to present Rudolf Fürst's five Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) from the 2021 vintage. Very often mistaken for Burgundy, albeit perhaps a little more texturally sleek, these are absolutely world class.

The Fürst family is said to have been involved in winemaking in the village of Bürgstadt since the 16th century. The sudden death of Rudolf Fürst in 1975 saw his son Paul take over the family's small, mixed agriculture farm, bringing with him a single-minded intent to grow the finest Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) possible. Paul began to focus entirely on grape-growing, and under his tenure the estate grew its holdings from 1.5 hectares to nearly 18. Paul's son Sebastian formally took over in 2017, having first joined his father in 2007. Sebastian, equally modest and thoughtful, has inherited Paul’s magic touch and continues to fine-tune.

The Fürst's farm Spätburgunder vines in three Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) vineyards; Centgrafenberg and Hundsrück in the village of Bürgstadt, and Schlossberg in the village of Klingenberg. Every effort is taken in the vineyards to keep yields low, including the replanting 10 years ago of 2/3 of the Schlossberg vineyard with Fin and Tres Fin Burgundian clones. High density planting, green harvesting and intense canopy management are all used in an effort to produce finer, more intense fruit, and purer, finer, more sophisticated wines. It is a policy that undoubtedly works, as the ever increasingly quality from this superb estate attests to.

“Paul and Sebastian Fürst, father and son, seem to have Pinot Noir in their DNA”
Caro Maure MW, Decanter Magazine

“If one family embodies German Pinot Noir, it's Fürst”
Valerie Kathawala, Noble Rot Magazine

“They just carry on crafting these gorgeous wines with uncommon sensitivity, great intuition and with just one aim in mind: elegance”
Anne Krebiehl MW, The Wines of Germany
